Consumerism - IELTS Speaking - Modern Society is Materialistic

Image
Consumerism What is the culture of consumerism? What are the positive and negative effects of consumerism and materialism? Why is modern society often called materialistic? What are the advantages and disadvantages of consumerism? What is the culture of consumerism? Consumerism is a term used to describe the tendency for people to want more and more goods, regardless of their value. More than an attraction towards goods in general, consumerism is the misuse of other people's money. Consumerists turn ethics on its head by creating new products that can only exist because they're bought with credit card debt or financed through loans. A true capitalist would use available spare capacity (factories and workers) efficiently while providing something desirable for consumers as a result - not try to stimulate demand for worthless junk that adds no value (but is monetized). What this means is that companies push their sales up by creating artificial needs for prod...

IELTS Speaking | Why do some people write letters to newspapers?

IELTS Part 3 Questions about letters Why do some people write letters to newspapers? That’s an interesting question, but I’m not really sure why they would do it – it’s not something I’ve ever done. I guess they might feel strongly about a particular issue or want to voice a complaint about something which is directly affecting them or a cause that they are passionate about. I suppose if you compare it to people commenting on social media or blogs then it’s not such a strange way to state your opinion – it’s just takes a lot more time and effort, because you have to write the letter and then wait for it to be published – I’m guessing that it’s mainly older people who would write letters to a newspaper. IELTS Speaking | What can people do if they receive unwanted advertising in the mail?

IELTS Part 3 Questions about letters What can people do if they receive unwanted advertising in the mail? I believe they can do a couple of things; they can contact the company which sent the unwanted advertising and request that they don’t send anymore, and they can also instruct the post office to not deliver this kind of unsolicited mail to their mail box. I’m not sure if you can just say you don’t want ‘anything like that’ delivered or if you have to specify the name of the sender in each case. It’s not something I’ve ever had a problem with personally. Oh, and of course, they could always just do nothing – I mean, collect it from the mail box and then throw it in the garbage – done! No need to contact anyone or get anyone else involved. Next Question

IELTS Speaking | Do you think it is better to apply for a job by letter or by email?

IELTS Part 3 Questions about letters Do you think it is better to apply for a job by letter or by email? (Why?/Why not?) Personally, I prefer to send an email, but which is better? Well, the easy answer would depend on what it says on the job vacancy – if it asks you to send your resume and covering letter by email, or even upload it to their site, then that’s the best way to apply. On the other hand, if the company or agency asks you to mail your resume and covering letter, then clearly that’s the best way. Really, I think nowadays most recruitment professionals expect to receive resumes and applicant details by email rather than in hard copy. Next Question

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Emails Advantages & Disadvantages

IELTS Speaking Test Part 3 Questions What are the advantages and disadvantages of emails, compared to handwritten letters? Okay, let’s talk about the advantages first; they’re quicker to write, send and they arrive instantly in the inbox of the recipient. You don’t have to buy paper, you don’t have to buy an envelope, you don’t have to buy a stamp, and you don’t have to go to the mail box or post office to send it. Emails are fast, free and environmentally friendly (because there’s no transport involved). As for disadvantages – I can’t think of any. However, obviously to send an email to someone, the other person must have a computer to be able to receive it. That’s about the only limitation. Handwritten letters waste paper, time and money, it’s so old fashioned and outdated, even though some people might consider a letter to be more personal; that’s just my personal opinion, letters are so wasteful.

Speaking Topics - How do you remind yourself about things?

IELTS Speaking Part 3 Questions Give some examples of how you remind yourself about things. I think the most obvious ways would be to make a note and stick it in a place you will see everyday – like on your desk, computer, in your car or wherever you’re sure you’ll see it when it’s appropriate, that's what I used to do. You could also program your phone or computer to remind you of loads of things if you think that you might forget them, that's what I do all the time now. You could always ask someone to remind you about something, but then you have to rely on the other person not forgetting, so maybe that’s not the best idea unless the other person is really good at remembering things. Using your phone is probably the best plan – it’s so easy and you always have it with you – so it would be really difficult to forget something if you program a reminder for yourself. What do you think of people using calendars to remind themselves of things? There are pros a...

Describe a Good Service You Received

Image
Describe a good service you received on a particular occasion You should say: Where did you receive the service? What happened? Who was with you? And explain how you felt about the service. www.ielts.org Describe a Good Service You Received Sample Answer I went to this new sushi restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan last night with some friends, and it was just fantastic. I had already heard some good things about it from my coworkers at work. It's called Sakura House. The service was just so friendly and efficient. We were seated as soon as we arrived at 6 pm on a Thursday. That was surprising because sometimes during happy hour (5-7 pm), the wait can be pretty long. The menu is extensive, but they all serve traditional Japanese dishes with a few adaptations for locals who aren't used to eating fish every day, like myself! Once you think you've decided on your meal, one of the staff comes over to help you and take your order. It was so...
