IELTS 2016 Speaking Test | Do you think that today’s modern lifestyle has pushed parents and grandparents further away from the younger generation?

IELTS Speaking Test Part 3 Questions

Do you think that today’s modern lifestyle has pushed parents and grandparents further away from the younger generation?

In some ways yes, but it’s also brought them closer together. For example, there are many things nowadays which for the younger generation are quite normal, whether on a personal level, at work or in life in general – things which our parents never did or our grandparents couldn’t ever have imagined. There’ll always be a generation gap – there always has been – it’s quite normal.

But while some older people might not understand everything about the younger generation, for example, why young people spend so much time on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media – and always seem to be taking pictures and posting things on the internet – the same technology allows my parents to video chat with my brother who is in Canada at the moment.

In the past, my grandparents would have had to write a letter or telephone Canada to find out what their son was doing – now they get to speak to their grandchildren face to face on video – it’s way better!

So yes there may be big differences and in some ways older people might feel there is a lot they don’t understand about modern life – but there are also big benefits from the technology available today in terms of families and friends keeping in touch with each other. I think it’s up to individuals whether these kinds of differences push us apart or bring us even closer.
